Living in the
Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. In order to live together peacefully, we ask everyone to be a good neighbor, to be considerate and be polite to those around you. To do so, below you can find some tips for living in this beautiful city.

  • SMILE & GREET: Nothing beats a greet with a smile, and you will notice most people smile right back at you. Most chats start with a greet!
    • "Goedemorgen buurman/buurvrouw" = "Goodmorning neighbor"
  • TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER: The Dutch love talking (/complaining) about the weather, so this is a perfect conversationstarter.
  • HELP: Don't hesitate to help or to ask for help.
  • MUSIC: Please consider the volume of your music or playstation. Sound travels further than you might think. If possible, we ask you to use headphones.
  • Parties: Inform your neighbord prior to throwing a party or having a larger group of visitors over at your place.
  • Saying goodbye: when your guests leave, say goodbye indoors (noise travels, please minimize noise disturbance).
  • Garbage: Please place your garbage in the designated areas inside and outside (during designated times). This has to do with birds and rats otherwise having a feast on this garbage.
  • DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BELONGINGS IN THE COMMUNAL AREAS. These areas should always be kept tidy and free from obstruction to prevent dangerous situations, in case of a fire or ambulance stretchers.
  • BBQ: Please keep your neighbors in mind. Do not barbeque too often and please consider WHERE you put the BBQ.
  • DO NOT POUR ANY FAT DOWN THE DRAIN: Fat causes sewage blockages and the damages can become messy and very costly (see pictures below)!
